Solo Show opening on October 1st - artwork by Tony Just
These works are largely inspired by flyers, handbills, graffiti, and posters - the constant urban input of throwaway imagery. Rain fades it, shopkeepers scrub it away, interested parties tear off the phone-contact tabs cut into the lower border. Soon the next flyer covers half of the image, or someone rips it down on a drunken whim, or the next graffito is painted over it. It changes all the time, out in the street.
But not on these canvases. Tony seized these moments, these individual wing-flaps of our culture, and reproduced them, in series, with variations. They are no longer throwaway. Someone’s dog, lost forever, is now memorialized by Western society. A flyer for a dance lesson is now re-worked again and again, the beauty of the stylized pose is presented to us again and again, a little differently each time. Did that dance lesson ever take place? Did anyone show up? In our world, it’s still being promised to us all. For free.
